She chooses not to give clear explanations, as she believes her works express themselves without the need for words. For Hsu, art is not about imposing meaning or telling stories but rather about entering into a conversation with the materials. She strives to maintain the purity of this dialogue so that she can hear the voices coming from the material, even at the cost of not meeting the expectations and understanding of others. Ishtar Hsu's work goes beyond representing still-lifes; it serves as a reflection of her inner world, full of voices, textures, and dynamic exchanges. The tearing, cutting, and reconstructing can be understood as a reflection of her inner conflicts while also showing her own understanding of still-life. In doing so, she defies simple definitions and refuses to be limited—even in photographic form—to a single, static, hushed aesthetic form. Instead, she seeks an experience, a power of energy, and provocative stimulation. In this way, she connects art to both the experience of pain and that of liberation. Each work feels like a still in which the paradoxical and distinct experiences of journeying through the fog of her inner self are merged into one image, in which contradictions are brought together into a visually natural composition. Not only does documentary have the ability to mobilise and build awareness about social issues, it also reflects the interaction between the community culture and individual participants. This paper first defines the meaning of new religious communities, then refers to the sociological theory of collective action frames on the exploration of social communities’ intentions and the methods they use while trying to communicate with the outside world, and further analyses the cultural background during the formation of the concept of Tzu Chi and its special community culture: learning from the models. That is, in this paper, documentary is regarded as a medium that uses role models to create narratives and further lead to certain desired behaviours. The series of magazine has been born by presenting the research for the assignment that was given by Rijksbouwmeester—Dutch National Architect— in collaboration of DAE. The aim was meant to define and propose the alternative for De Kruisberg building in Doetinchem, a former prison, now with empty and with no use. By establishing the title and general character of the magazine, the team decided to use the mandarin sign wéi, meaning enclosure. The editorial team believe it relates perfectly to De Kruisberg, as the beauty of this symbol is that by adding different characters into it, it’s meaning can change. Our research revolved around very broad spectrum of topic: from aboriginal self-governed communities, through self-management and open-source reference, to physical loneliness, the need we have for touch and human relationships. We believe by adding meaningful elements to the space, what used to be enclosure can become empowerment. Building a community cannot be done in any other way than by asking crucial questions, having a clear goal of what is there to achieve. Communities, more than anything, should change and adapt depending on circumstance. Can those self-managing models serve as a recipe for constructing the cities of the future? We certainly believe so and that is why we propose this manual. This manual is base on an open-source model: a decentralized development model that encourages open collaboration base on open data. Many questions are left unanswered, as this manual is starting point for those who may want to continue with our idea.
